How to decide Reading Comprehension strategy for GMAT
RC is a monster for most of
us. Simply because of the fact that we are not comfortable with reading on a
screen under time pressure and thereafter answering questions. But RC score can
make a big difference to your Verbal score and hence overall GMAT score.
Here are some strategies we have
tried and have worked for different individuals. You can try these and then
pick the best Reading comprehension strategy that suits you.
1. Skim & refer
- Skim through the passage quickly.
- Read the first and last paragraphs
well and just get a gist of the remaining paragraphs.
- Make a map in your mind. e.g. If
there is a passage on how Internet has revolutionized the human networking
game, then reading the first paragraph will give you an idea of what the author
is talking about. Next few paras will give you some examples or instances so
these should be placed well in your mental map. If the author talks about Orkut
in para 2 then you should remember that and so on. Now read the concluding para
well and get an idea of the overall message the author wants to give.
- Now move to the questions. There
will be some questions you will be able to answer without referring back to the
passage. So crack them.
- For remaining questions, you
remember where the related thing was discussed. So read those lines again and
then answer the question.
This is one of the most effective
techniques.
2. Read Well Once
This strategy if good for people who are slow at reading but
remember things well. You should just read the passage well once and move to
crack the questions. But remember if you refer back then you will kill time in
reading again and will never be able to complete the verbal section.
